In Cedar Grove, New Mexico, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a drug or alcohol test using hair, we have expertise in this area with centers across the nation ready to perform the testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the preferred method for drug screening over standard urine tests. This trend is noticeable among employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals who favor hair tests over urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation programs use hair tests primarily for their extended detection capabilities, covering up to 90 days, with minimal risk of cheating, though urine tests still reign for recent drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by keeping biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When harvested near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches, approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample size of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. Note that when addressing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for laboratory evaluation of drug test outcomes is structured around four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's operations. Included in this is ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, the assignment of a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data input not incorporated through an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for the presence of drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most specimens, any positive screen must undergo confirmation to be permissible in legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening demand further confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair drug screening as the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive specimens are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized per CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards as well as under ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug consumption for up to 90 days, contrary to the shorter detection scope in urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is quite challenging to evade a hair drug test, increasing the reliability of results.
  • Offers chronological data: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: Drugs usually become detectable in hair about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variance in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences might influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
