In Cubero, New Mexico, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. When in need of a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, offering testing locations nationwide, including all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is necessary. Hair evaluations can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other options.

In the past few years, drug screening methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair tests over the conventional urine tests. This approach is ideal for employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal institutions, and those on probation, due to its extended drug use detection timeline, lasting up to 90 days, and resistance to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most precise when detecting drug use in the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal drug or alcohol use over approximately a 3-month span. Hair is straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of about 200 hair strands (the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair is suitable. When we reference head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Other hair signifies types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four core phases in the lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage, where samples are integrated into the lab's system. This step confirms proper sealing and shipment, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry missing from electronic custody records.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for drug presence. Though it is a budget-friendly method for eliminating potential drug use in most samples, any positive screen result must be validated for legal acceptance. Screening’s presumptive positives necessitate further confirmation.

Upon yielding a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is utilized from the original sample for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to urine or oral fluid tests, marking hair screening as complex to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive results from screening. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if needed. All steps from Accessioning to Confirmation align with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests reveal drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, thus results are more trustworthy.
  • Tracks historical usage: Provides insights into drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't detect recent intake: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more in comparison to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal growth rate differences can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle residing beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
