Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Dayton, New Mexico. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing ensures accurate results with facilities located nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has increasingly become part of the drug screening process. Employers, legal systems, and addiction specialists prefer this method over the traditional urine test due to its extended detection period up to 90 days. Though highly effective, for identifying recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now recognized as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the threads of the maturing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 90-day detection span for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimum sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, about 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If head hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental phases in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails initially entering a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizes additional data entry not captured through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial rapid test for prohibited substances. Although Screening provides a budget-friendly method to exclude drug usage in most samples, positive results require confirmation to hold validity in legal proceedings. Samples presumed positive in Screening need secondary verification.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thus hair drug analysis is the most complex to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo cleansing prior to Confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP Hair classification and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair substance analysis include:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair assessments can detect substance usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating hair assessments is highly challenging, leading to greater precision in results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a timeline of substance use spanning months, rather than only recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent ingestion: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair analyses usually incur higher costs compared to other drug screening techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", these analyses examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
