Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in El Rito, New Mexico. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in such testing, with facilities available across all cities nationwide that can conduct a hair test. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown or elsewhere on your body. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and a variety of other custom options.

In recent years, drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are employed by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its extended detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days, along with being observed during the collection process, making it nearly impossible to cheat. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective approach for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can indicate up to a three-month period of alcohol and drug usage. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is quite challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising approximately 200 fibers (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For procedures such as EtG, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It’s suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be substituted. 'Head hair' specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

In the lab, processing a drug test entails four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary step of incorporating a sample into a lab's system. This process includes ensuring the sample's seal and proper shipment, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs. While it provides a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug utilization for most samples, any positive results in Screening will need further validation to be legally acceptable. Presumptive positives identified during Screening require secondary validation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are derived from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most technically challenging methodologies.

Positive screening confirmations are completed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before final confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as needed. The complete sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timespan.
  • Hard to mask: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Reflects historical patterns: It reveals drug usage trends over an extended timeline, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot capture recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variable outcomes: Variations like hair color and differences in individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
