Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Engle, New Mexico. Our expertise in hair and alcohol testing is complemented by our nationwide presence, enabling us to conduct tests in various cities. Typically, individuals must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available, often sourced from the crown. Hair analysis can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific tests.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent as a method for substance detection. Employers, legal courts, and substance abuse counselors are increasingly opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. This preference is driven by zero-tolerance policies and the test's reliability. Hair testing's main advantage is a detection window of up to 90 days, combined with an observed collection method that makes tampering unlikely. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent (within 5 days) drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluation is increasingly recognized as an effective approach for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair captures a historical record of intoxicants by embedding indicators within its evolving structure. When obtained near the head's surface, hair can offer insight into substance and alcohol exposure over a span of nearly three months. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches, roughly 200 individual hairs (similar to a #2 pencil in diameter) near the head, yields 100mg—ideal for preliminary and confirmatory examinations. For EtG and/or evaluations exceeding 10 categories, 150mg is preferable. We suggest assessing the quantity using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not accessible, a comparable volume of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers exclusively to hair on the scalp. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Processing Workflow

The lab process for analyzing a drug sample encompasses four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning integrates a specimen into the lab's system. This step checks whether the specimen was appropriately sealed and conveyed, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes other incoming data requisites potentially lacking from an automated chain of custody process.

Screening is a preliminary examination to detect drug presence. Although Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use suspicion in most samples, a conclusive result is needed for legal admissibility. Specimens suggesting the presence of substances during Screening demand further verification.

Should a sample test positively during the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved for the Extraction process. This involves drug retrieval from hair at a reduced concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug assessments the most complex to execute.

Verification of a positive screening outcome happens through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing positive in the preliminary check are cleansed before final analysis, as necessary. The entire evaluation cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and upholds ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Pros of hair drug examinations:

  • Extended detection period: Hair assessments can trace drug activity up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with briefer detection ranges.
  • Resistance to deception: Hair tests are challenging to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Retrospective insight: Offers an overview of drug habits over an interval, beyond just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to ascertain recent activity: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair analysis.
  • Expense: Hair examinations are typically costlier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and growth rate differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
