Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance testing services in Ensenada, New Mexico. For hair or alcohol assessments, we are experts in hair testing and maintain testing facilities in cities across the nation for administering these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair samples can be tested for substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In recent years, the preference for conducting drug diagnostics has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now often require hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, legal authorities, and those on probation due to their benefits, including an extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and difficulties in tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying substance use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair analysis is regarded as a potent method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, offering a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence. When taken from near the scalp, hair reveals a detection span for alcohol and drugs reaching approximately three months. Gathering is straightforward, tampering is somewhat challenging, and transit is convenient.

Extracting a 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, perfect for both screening and confirming. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advocate for measuring the sample's weight with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, the same quantity of body hair may be utilized. Head hair exclusively denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory journey from initial sample to drug test result comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of introducing a sample into the laboratory's workflow. This ensures samples are appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any requisite data entry not managed by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening signifies a preliminary swift check for drug presence. While Screening is an affordable method to dismiss drug activity in many cases, any positive findings demand confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples identified as positive during Screening necessitate further verification.

When a sample shows a positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, the drug is isolated from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All positive presumptive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The comprehensive laboratory method, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair analysis can trace drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine analysis offers a shorter span.
  • Resistance to deception: Cheating in hair drug testing is notably difficult, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Chronological insights: Offers a pattern of substance use over time rather than merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent consumption: Detection in hair requires approximately 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis tends to be costlier than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color discrepancies and individual variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle located under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
