Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Folsom, New Mexico. If a hair drug or alcohol examination is necessary, our expertise lies in hair testing. Our testing centers, located across all U.S. cities, can conduct these tests. For most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair analysis options.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have become more popular for drug screening. Many businesses, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over the usual urine method. Hair follicle tests are favored among employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers. A major advantage is their ability to trace drug use over a longer span, usually up to 3 months, through an observed collection, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for drug use in the past 5 days, urine testing retains its accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers a detection window of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches, containing about 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab process for determining a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any further data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary swift assessment for drugs. While cost-effective for excluding drug consumption in most specimens, a positive result must be verified for legal validity. Any specimen that indicates a possible positive during Screening requires further confirmation.

If the sample shows a possible positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection window: Hair tests identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is significantly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows historical use: Displays drug usage trends over a duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No detection for recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Price: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Folsom, NM

Comparing Benefits: Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability over urine tests. While urine tests only detect recent drug intake, hair testing provides a more detailed history of substance use. Employers benefit from hair follicle tests since they minimize the chances of sample tampering and ensure a transparent screening process.

Detection Advantages: Hair tests yield reliable, long-term insights into drug use patterns. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to recent usage, hair analysis paints a broader picture, making it a more dependable choice for comprehensive assessments. Thus, businesses and legal entities in Folsom can rely on hair tests for more accurate and thorough evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Folsom, NM

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window, making it ideal for uncovering drug use up to 90 days prior. This longer timeframe gives employers in Folsom a holistic perspective on an individual's substance history. As a result, it provides valuable insights into an applicant's or employee's behavior over time, allowing for more informed decision-making regarding potential hires.

Employers seeking comprehensive substance histories benefit greatly from the extended detection capabilities of hair follicle tests. Because they trace usage over several months, they supply a broader understanding of an individual's drug use patterns, which is crucial for maintaining a safe and drug-free workplace. This extended insight aids in making well-rounded employment decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
