In Gallinas, New Mexico, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, we are experts in this field, with nationwide centers available to perform the procedure. A segment of hair, typically 1.5 to 2 inches long from the crown or body, is required for the test. Our hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized accordingly.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained prominence in the realm of drug testing. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer it over conventional urine tests. Industries, especially those with zero-tolerance policies, as well as courts and probation cases, favor hair tests. The main advantage is its ability to detect substances for up to 90 days, through a closely monitored collection process, making it extremely challenging to tamper. Nevertheless, for detecting intake within the past five days, urine tests are still the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug use. Hair retains a prolonged record of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is recommended. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When specifying head hair, it refers only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory procedure of processing a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial, rapid test for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen result requires confirmation to be used legally. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in different techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to administer.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to any required confirmation. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can uncover drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that feature a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can display a drug use pattern over time rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform traditional urine tests in Gallinas, NM? The unmatched detection accuracy and reliability offer a strategic advantage. Unlike urine testing, hair testing reflects longer drug use patterns, ensuring thorough substance use evaluation.

Employers and judicial systems favor this method as it offers a broader detection window. Compared to urine tests, hair tests are more difficult to subvert, maintaining the integrity of the drug testing process.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Gallinas, NM, extends its detection window up to 90 days. This extensive period enables employers to garner a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history, empowering informed decisions.

This prolonged detection capacity underscores the advantage of hair testing over shorter-frame tests. It equips organizations with a clearer insight into an applicant's or employee's past drug use, enhancing policy compliance.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests in Gallinas, NM, addresses concerns of sample adulteration. It provides unquestionable results, making it a preferred choice for those requiring assured testing accuracy.

Due to the protected collection method, hair tests minimize the risk of cheating. This reliability is crucial for maintaining the integrity of testing outcomes and instilling confidence among stakeholders.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
