Hebron, New Mexico is home to comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services provided by Accredited Drug Testing. If you're in need of drug or alcohol hair tests, our specialized centers nationwide are fully equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient, and tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as needed.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for evaluating drug use. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are leaning more towards hair drug tests over traditional urine samples. For firms with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation, hair tests offer an advantage with a 90-day detection window, observed sample collection, and strong resistance to tampering. For drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the developing strand, yielding a comprehensive history of alcohol and drugs. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. It's straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal quantity of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and taking care of any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick scan for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-efficient manner to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive screen must undergo confirmation for court admissibility. Samples indicated as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are quite challenging to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Hair tests can reveal drug use patterns over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair occurs roughly 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other testing procedures.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and personal variances in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Hebron, NM, outshines traditional urine testing by offering unmatched detection accuracy and reliability. Its ability to reveal drug use over an extended period gives it an edge over urine tests, which typically only show recent use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
