Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle tests for drugs and alcohol in Hondo, New Mexico. If you require testing, our centers nationwide offer specialized hair testing services. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the crown or body. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts choose it over traditional urine tests to uphold zero-tolerance rules. It offers a 90-day detection period, involves supervised collection, and is nearly cheat-proof. However, for drugs used in the past five days, urine testing remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair, offering an extensive record of substance use. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the ideal quantity for both initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG assessments, additions, and/or more comprehensive tests over 10 panels, a sample quantity of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a corresponding quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four phases in laboratory drug test result processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory’s system, confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional information not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid review for substance abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-effective method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally binding. Samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening necessitate confirmation.

Upon presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other procedures (such as urine or oral fluid), showcasing hair drug screening’s complexity.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods conduct Confirmation of any positive screening outcome. Before confirmation, all samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed as needed. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine assessments have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to subvert: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals drug use trends over a duration, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs generally become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair assessments typically incur greater costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: These assessments, commonly termed "hair follicle tests", actually evaluate the hair strand rather than the subscalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
