Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Jarales, New Mexico. For those requiring a drug or alcohol test via hair, we specialize in these tests and have centers nationwide capable of conducting such procedures. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Various options are available, including tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized examinations.

Hair follicle tests have become increasingly popular for drug testing in recent times. It's the preferred choice for many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers often rely on hair drug tests. They boast a longer detection window—up to 90 days—collected under observation, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. Yet, urine tests remain more suitable for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of substance usage by incorporating biomarkers into the hair strand as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month period of substance detection for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, quite hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample about 1.5 inches long, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), taken nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for assessment and confirmation. For EtG, special tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a collection of 150mg is advised. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair is insufficient, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in processing a drug test in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is incorporated into the laboratory’s system. This process ensures that the sample has been properly sealed and shipped, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any missing data entry is completed if not by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial, rapid assessment for potential drug use. Though Screening efficiently eliminates drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court-admissible. Any samples showing potential positive results in Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for preparation in Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: The accuracy of hair drug tests is high as they are challenging to manipulate.
  • Offers history of use: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth variance can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Jarales, NM, offers significant advantages over urine testing. With superior detection accuracy, hair tests delve deeper into an individual's substance use history, revealing drug use patterns that might go unnoticed in urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
