Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Las Palomas, New Mexico. Specializing in hair analysis, our centers nationwide, including those in all major cities, are equipped to perform hair drug and alcohol tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed for testing. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized evaluations.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists often prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle evaluations are utilized by organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal courts, and for probation cases. The major advantage is its extended detection window, which captures up to 90 days of substance use history and is conducted under direct observation, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, for detecting use within the past five days, urine tests remain the superior choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance usage. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and other substances through biomarkers captured in the hair strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection range of up to nearly three months for alcohol and various drugs. The process of acquiring hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. In discussions referring to head hair, the reference is exclusively to scalp hair. All other types are considered body hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that produce a presumptive positive in Screening need further verification.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, substances are separated from hair at a much lower concentration than in other processes (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to implement.

Every positive screen result is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: Hair drug tests are exceptionally hard to manipulate, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Reveals historical usage: It can track patterns of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It requires 5-7 days for substances to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
