Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Levy, New Mexico. Need a substance or alcohol test? Our expertise in hair testing is nationwide, with centers in every city for your convenience. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used for testing various substances and alcohol/ETG.

Hair follicle testing has gained traction over recent years as a drug test method. Employers, judiciary, and Substance Abuse consultants often favor hair tests over urine tests. It's preferred for zero-tolerance policies, court-mandated tests, and probation checks. A key advantage is its extended drug detection window up to 90 days, coupled with monitored collections that are very hard to falsify. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within a 5-day frame.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can present up to about a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easily shipped.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equal volume of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter window.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is very hard, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Provides ongoing data: It can depict a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
