Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Lincoln, New Mexico. For individuals requiring hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities across cities nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair can be used. Hair testing can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

In recent times, the preference for conducting drug analysis has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, the judiciary, and addiction professionals now often favor hair testing over traditional urine exams. Hair follicle evaluations are ideal for those enforcing strict no-drug-use policies. The test's key advantage lies in its extended drug detection period, usually lasting up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and being nearly impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting recent usage, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a long-term record of substances by embedding markers in the hair strand's fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a three-month window for detecting substances. It is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hairs (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample is recommended. We advise measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, equivalent body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers explicitly to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result mainly involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. It involves verifying that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial quick examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug usage on most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptance in court. Any samples that return a presumptively positive result in Screening indeed require secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are recovered from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the hardest to perform.

Confirmation for any positive screen result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The whole processing sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can perceive drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to fabricate results: The difficulty of cheating a hair drug test results in more accurate outcomes.
  • Tracks usage over time: Offers a pattern of substance use over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expenses: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth variability can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
