Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Manzano Springs, NM. If you're seeking a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair evaluations, supported by centers in every city nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. Hair tests offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for detecting substance use. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are choosing hair tests over standard urine tests. Agencies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers rely on hair tests for accuracy. They offer a detection period of up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are hard to tamper with. Yet, for detecting drug use over the past 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term indicator of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If there is no scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial inclusion of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening facilitates a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Screening is an efficient way to dismiss drug use for most samples, but a positive result must be confirmed for court validity. Samples that are likely positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample indicates positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation for any screening positive result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are likely positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is checked under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is very challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of findings.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a drug use pattern over a duration, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can change the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
