Accredited Drug Testing provides hair follicle drug testing services in Meadow Lake, New Mexico. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers are available nationwide for your convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are needed. Hair tests enable analysis not only for drugs and alcohol/ETG but also for a range of customized options.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has been increasing among employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, who favor them over urine tests. Hair tests suit employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, court mandates, and probation terms. Their key advantage is a longer detection period, typically up to 90 days, offering a near-impossible chance of tampering. Meanwhile, urine tests maintain high accuracy for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair testing has become recognized as a robust mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer a prolonged historical record of alcohol and drug activity, capturing biomarker residues within the fibers of the developing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can yield an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) that is nearest to the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or when conducting tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used instead. When discussing head hair, we're addressing scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps entailed in the lab processing of drug testing results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s protocol. This process includes validating that the sample is sealed and has been shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening encompasses a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening efficiently rules out drug consumption in most samples; however, a screen showing positive must be ascertained to be valid in a legal scenario. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample be deemed presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In this stage, drug substances are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than alternative methodologies (for instance, urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug screening ranks as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using either GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory protocol, beginning with Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the credential in ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug testing identifies drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to alter the results of a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: The test provides a drug usage pattern over a duration of time, rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent consumption: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be present in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug by-products in the hair.

Note: Although often described as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
