In Mesquite, New Mexico, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unrivaled, with testing sites located in every city across the nation. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing solutions.

Recent trends show a growing inclination towards hair follicle drug tests for substance detection. Employers, legal bodies, and addiction specialists now favor hair tests over conventional urine tests. These are vital for organizations with strict no-drug policies and for individuals under probation. The primary advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, obtained in a monitored setting, making it highly reliable. However, for tracing recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are still deemed more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When cut near the scalp, hair offers up to an approximately 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A sample of 1.5 inches in length consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) collected nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" pertains to scalp hair exclusively, while "body hair" refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core phases in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is inducted into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial, rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

If a sample is deemed presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to implement.

Any positive result from Screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning through to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It’s quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, increasing the accuracy of the results.
  • Tracks usage history: It can display a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing is typically more expensive than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
