Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Organ, NM. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with testing facilities available across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is required. Hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in drug testing procedures. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair over urine tests. These tests are used in workplaces with strict drug policies, courts, and probation scenarios. Hair follicle tests offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and are challenging to evade. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now considered an efficient method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can archive a comprehensive history of alcohol and various substances by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When cut close to the scalp, hair can offer an approximately three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) at the scalp's proximity will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for preliminary and subsequent confirmation testing. For EtG, extra add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When addressing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The crucial stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample into the lab’s workflow. This includes ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any additional data not captured by an electronic custody tracking system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for the presence of illegal substances. While Screening offers a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed to be deemed valid in legal settings. Samples appearing positive during Screening mandate subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial source and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or saliva), emphasizing why hair drug analysis is the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug analyses can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a reduced detection scope.
  • Hard to manipulate: Attempting to deceive a hair drug analysis is quite challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Yields historical patterns: It allows understanding of drug use trends over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses typically incur higher costs compared to other drug screening methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair fiber, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Organ, NM, hair follicle tests prove superior to traditional urine tests. While urine tests detect recent drug use, hair testing offers unmatched detection accuracy over a longer span. This method tracks drug habits effectively over 90 days, unlike urine tests, which show only recent consumption.

The resilient nature of hair samples reduces chances of tampering, ensuring authenticity and reliability of results. These features make hair follicle tests a preferred choice for comprehensive drug screening by employers and legal professionals alike.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Organ, NM allows for a significantly extended detection window for drug use. Unlike other methods, hair tests can trace substances used up to 90 days before, providing a thorough view of an individual's usage history.

This extended period equips employers with a deeper understanding of an employee's or job candidate's substance habits, facilitating informed hiring and maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
