Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Peralta, New Mexico. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across various cities nationwide equipped to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing needs.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug tests have gained prevalence in drug testing methods. Employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse professionals often opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation cases for their longer detection period of up to 90 days. The process is monitored, making it extremely difficult to manipulate. Yet, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is increasingly recognized as an invaluable method for unveiling drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of maturing hair, it offers a retrospective insight into alcohol and drug exposure. When obtained near the scalp, it can yield a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we talk about head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The essential steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes integrating a sample into a lab's database. This step involves ensuring the sample was secured and dispatched properly, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data input not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Despite being a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in the majority of cases, any positive screen results must be validated for legal acceptance. Samples identified as presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are withdrawn from hair at concentrations substantially lower than in other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), showcasing hair drug testing as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing ahead of confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests unveil drug consumption for as long as 90 days, contrary to urine tests that offer a short detection span.
  • Cheat-proof nature: It's exceedingly strenuous to deceive a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historic data provision: This test reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable recent use: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result diversity: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence the drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", this examination focuses on analyzing the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Peralta, NM, provides an edge over urine tests due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine testing, hair analysis captures drug use over months, providing a more thorough insight into an individual's drug history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
