Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Picuris Pueblo, New Mexico. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with centers across numerous cities Nationwide ready to conduct your test. Generally, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Hair tests can be tailored for substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other possibilities.

In recent times, conducting drug tests frequently involves hair follicle testing. There is a trend for employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts to prefer hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. Employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, or probation terms are notable users. The main advantage is an extended detection timeline, typically up to 90 days, with samples collected observably, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain best for detecting very recent (within 5 days) drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. It provides a long-lasting record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil girth) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Usage of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in processing a drug test in a laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase entails integrating a sample into a lab’s system. It includes verifying the sample's seal and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any additional data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient strategy for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening will require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive presumptively in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other testing methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter period urine tests provide.
  • Resistance to falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Tracks usage history: This test can reflect patterns of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug screenings are more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences may influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
