At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pinehill, New Mexico. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, look no further than Accredited Drug Testing. We have a vast network of testing facilities across the nation, all equipped to administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other hair testing options.

Lately, there has been a growing trend towards utilizing hair follicle drug tests in drug screening processes. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are now opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by entities with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. Hair follicle testing is advantageous due to its extended detection window, reaching up to 90 days, and its highly supervised collection process makes it difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the go-to choice for identifying recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional assays, and/or panel tests exceeding 10, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be harvested. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary entry of a sample into a laboratory’s records. This process verifies that the specimen was securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody record.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment intended to detect substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for the majority of cases, a favorable screen must be validated for it to stand up in legal settings. Samples with presumptive positives during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen returns a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels than other mediums (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex approach to execute.

Using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies, any positive screening results are verified. All samples given a presumptive positive designation undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The end-to-end laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations are capable of identifying drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine exams which have briefer detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating hair drug tests is exceedingly challenging, thus enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical insight: It grants a chronological pattern of substance use over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: There is approximately a 5-7 day period before drugs become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternate drug assessment approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal growth differences can impact the presence of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although sometimes labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis inspects the hair strand itself, not the subscalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
