Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug examinations in Pueblo Pintado, New Mexico. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise is in hair assessments, with testing centers available in every city across the nation that can administer a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing choices.

In recent times, the hair follicle method for drug testing has increasingly gained preference. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are suitable for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal courts, and probation individuals. The significant advantage lies in its extended detection period, often up to 90 days, collected under observation, and challenging to evade. However, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained acceptance as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair strands provide a prolonged substance history by embedding biomarkers within the fiber structure of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an approximately 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp can yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample for assessments and confirmations. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. In reference to head hair, we mean solely scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial inclusion of a specimen into a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid appraisal for drugs. Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drugs in most samples; however, a positive screening must be confirmed for court acceptance. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower levels than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the complex methodologies.

Verification of any positive screen is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation alongside accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criterion.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments detect substances for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are particularly resistant to tampering, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: Displays a pattern of substance usage over time rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair coloration and personal differences in hair growth can impact metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the testing focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle under the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
