Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Redrock, New Mexico. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. We have testing centers in cities across the nation that offer hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be utilized. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are adopted by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the courts, and individuals on probation. A key advantage is the lengthy detection period of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, for drug use in the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a historical record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of hair strands during growth. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer around a three-month scope for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and validation. For EtG, additional, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair might be collected. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four primary stages in lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial sample processing within a laboratory’s system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary examination for drugs. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is observed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thus enhancing the results' accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can display a pattern of drug use over time, rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Redrock, NM, outshines traditional urine tests due to its superior detection reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can reveal ongoing substance use within a larger timeframe, providing a comprehensive picture.
The extended detection capacity of hair testing catches patterns missed by standard urine screenings, especially helpful for employers targeting consistent and past drug use across employees.

When comparing hair and urine tests, the advantage becomes clear: hair tests prevent short-term avoidance of detection found in short-detection-period urine tests. This aspect is invaluable in designing accurate and informed substance protocols.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Redrock, NM, benefit from hair follicle testing by tapping into an extensive detection window of up to 90 days. This wide timeframe uncovers instances of drug use that may go unnoticed in other test types down the line.
Optimal for long-term assessments, this prolonged detection supports a well-rounded understanding of an individual’s substance history, offering depth beyond traditional testing options for continual monitoring.

The longevity of detectable substance use enriches pre-employment screening processes, safeguards workplace integrity, and outlines a person's history, allowing for proper evaluation amidst employee or applicant drug-use checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
