Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in San Luis, New Mexico. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair testing, and we have centers across various cities Nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Usually, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is sufficient. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other bespoke testing solutions.

In modern times, the approach for drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals demand a hair drug test over a conventional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on probation. The major advantage of a hair follicle drug test is in its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, gathered through an observed collection process, making it practically uncheatable. However, for screening drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within its growing fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period extending up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests surpassing ten panels, a sample of 150mg is preferred. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in the laboratory includes four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies the sample's sealing and shipping integrity, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic custody record.

Screening consists of a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. All samples showing initial positive results in Screening must undergo further verification.

When a Screening yields a presumptive positive, an additional hair sample is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those found in urine or oral fluid tests. Hair testing is therefore considered the most complex drug screening method.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that return presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted adhering to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine assessments offer a brief detection span.
  • Challenge to tamper: Hair tests are notably resistant to manipulation, ensuring reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage insights: Offers a timeline of drug consumption over time instead of just present use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be more costly than alternative drug testing types.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth traits can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly designated as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
