In Sandia Park, New Mexico, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol testing, our centers in various cities across the nation provide accurate assessments. Typically, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, which is analyzed for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Hair follicle testing has gained traction in recent years as a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine ones. Its advantage includes a longer detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and difficulty in tampering. Urine tests still excel in detecting recent drug use within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair fibers capture biomarkers, providing a long-term historical record of alcohol and drugs. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximately 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, consisting of about 200 strands near the scalp (roughly the size of a #2 pencil), will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial processing of a sample within a lab's system, including verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening necessitate additional verification.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: Provides a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sandia Park, NM, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests in drug detection. With a longer detection window, hair tests capture substance use over extended periods, enhancing accuracy. Superior to urine tests, these tests offer more definitive results, addressing the complexities of drug detection and providing assured outcomes.

While urine tests are effective for recent use detection, hair tests offer the advantage of identifying long-term substance use patterns. This makes them an invaluable tool for employers and legal systems aiming to enforce zero-tolerance policies, ensuring a safer, drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Sandia Park, NM, offers an extended window of detection, reaching back up to 90 days. This capability provides a comprehensive view of an individual’s substance history, crucial for employers aiming to evaluate both past and ongoing drug use.

By covering a more extended period, hair tests give a better understanding of an applicant or employee's substance habits. This extended detection window is advantageous for long-term analysis, offering in-depth insights into an individual's behavior over months rather than days.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

One of the significant benefits of hair follicle tests in Sandia Park, NM, is their resistance to tampering. Due to the nature of the sample, it is considerably more challenging to alter, ensuring that results are reliable and unquestionable, providing a true reflection of substance use.

Unlike other methods susceptible to adulteration, hair tests stand out as a robust choice for preventing sample manipulation. This reduction in risk ensures that employers and institutions can trust the integrity of the test outcomes, making informed decisions based on genuine results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
