Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico. If you need a hair or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing covers all cities Nationwide. Ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body that can be used. Hair tests can verify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has seen increased usage in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now often prefer a hair test over a urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are preferred by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair testing is the prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, with observed sample collection, making it nearly foolproof. However, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting drug use within the prior 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended historical record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When collected from near the scalp, hair samples can reflect about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to ship.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch sample of about 200 hair strands, roughly the size of a #2 pencil, from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we're specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening effectively rules out drug usage for most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be accepted legally. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require secondary validation.

For samples testing presumptively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than those in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection length.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" often used does not fully describe the test, which analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
