Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Seboyeta, New Mexico. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, consider Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair analysis, with testing centers available across the nation. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for testing purposes. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and allows for tailored testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose them over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, along with courts and probation programs, leverage hair tests due to their extended detection time of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and minimal risk of tampering. For recent drug use detection, within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which serves as the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test in a lab involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This involves confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial brief assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legal in court. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed via technologies such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests detect drug usage up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Testing integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is extraordinarily difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals usage patterns over a timeline, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation targets the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
