In Southwest Chaves, New Mexico, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair testing extends to all cities across the nation through our numerous testing centers. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body for analysis. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized testing options.

There's been a shift towards hair follicle drug tests in recent years for drug testing. This method is now preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, replacing the traditional urine test. Hair follicle testing is ideal for employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation individuals, thanks to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, making it difficult to cheat, and providing consistent results. For recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer an extended timeline by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide approximately a 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair sampling is easy to perform, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to obtain 150mg of the sample. It's recommended to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. Referring to head hair specifies scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary procedure of logging a sample into the lab's processes. This involves confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for drug misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result must be authenticated for legal purposes. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or saliva), which is why hair drug screening is notably challenging.

Positive results from Screening are verified through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation, as required. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair regulations, alongside ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficult to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical usage data: Can display a timeline of drug use, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair strands.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The test, though termed as "hair follicle tests", evaluates the hair strand and not the subscalp hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outperforms urine tests in Southwest Chaves, NM due to its superior detection window. Compared to urine tests, which only capture recent drug use, hair testing identifies substance use patterns over a longer period. This capability makes it an ideal choice for employers and courts looking to uphold stringent drug policies.

The reliability of hair testing in detecting drug use is unmatched. Unlike urine tests, which are vulnerable to tampering, hair tests provide a secure method of assessment. The extended detection window covers up to 90 days, offering a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history without the risk of manipulation.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Southwest Chaves, NM offers an extended detection window for drug use, providing valuable insight into the past 90 days. This testing method gives employers a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's substance history, helping to make informed decisions regarding hiring or retention.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
