Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Sunland Park, NM. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair examinations is supported by numerous centers across the Nationwide network. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used for testing. Our hair tests can scrutinize for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Increasingly, drug testing methods have integrated hair follicle exams. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance professionals often prefer hair analysis over urine screening. Hair follicle tests are vital for zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and probationary monitoring. With a detection range of up to 90 days, these tests are robust against tampering, though urine tests are unmatched for recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The examination of hair has evolved into a compelling method for identifying substance use, including drugs and alcohol. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow, hair provides a long-term record of substance use. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month detection period for substances. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (comparable to the circumference of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, considered the perfect amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair should be understood as scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (e.g., facial, underarm).

Process Overview

Four major phases are included in processing a drug test result at the laboratory: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory's records. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fills in any data gaps not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for identifying potential drug abuse. Even though screening is economical for eliminating drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples showing a potential positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample tests as potentially positive during the Screening process, more hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are removed from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive screening results are substantiated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with a potential positive outcome undergo washing before final verification as required. The entire laboratory undertaking from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, increasing result accuracy.
  • Yields historical data: It can demonstrate drug use patterns over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent usage: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Sunland Park, NM

In comparison to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing stands out with its superior detection capability. Hair tests offer a wider detection window, making them more reliable for uncovering long-term substance use. While urine tests may miss instances of drug use, hair testing captures a comprehensive view.

One major advantage of hair testing over urine screening is its resistance to tampering. Urine samples are more susceptible to adulteration, but hair samples provide a more secure and tamper-resistant method. For employers, this means greater reliability in maintaining a drug-free environment in the workplace.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Sunland Park, NM

Hair follicle testing excels with its extended detection window, which can encompass up to 90 days of drug use. This capability offers employers a thorough understanding of an individual's substance history, going beyond the brief period that urine tests cover.

By highlighting results over a longer timeframe, hair testing enables employers to evaluate more accurately whether a prospective or current employee adheres to company policies. This extensive insight supports better employment decisions and ensures a safer workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Sunland Park, NM

Reducing the risk of tampering is a key benefit of hair follicle tests. Compared to other testing methods, manipulating a hair sample is considerably more challenging, yielding results that are both reliable and difficult to dispute. This enhances the credibility of the testing process.

For employers and legal entities, the integrity of results is paramount. Hair testing provides a tamper-resistant approach that greatly diminishes opportunities for sample adulteration. The assurance of accurate outcomes helps maintain trust in the testing system.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
