Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Tecolote, New Mexico. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist with facilities available across all cities Nationwide to perform hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or body is necessary. Hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, drug testing methods have shifted towards using hair follicle drug tests more frequently. Numerous employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, or individuals on probation. The significant advantage lies in their extended drug detection ability, generally up to 90 days, collected under observed conditions, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for cases involving recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for tracing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When harvested near the scalp, it can reveal usage over a span of up to three months. Hair is easy to gather, moderately challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. In cases where scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for producing a drug test outcome consists of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is integrated into a laboratory's system. It includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation to identify the presence of drugs of abuse. While Screening serves as an economical method to eliminate drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is found presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted at concentrations much lower than those used in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

The Confirmation phase for any positive results from Screening employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to evade testing: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical data: Hair testing can reveal a timeline of drug use, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not suited for detecting recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the levels of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Tecolote, NM, stands above traditional urine tests due to its superior detection precision. Urine tests are limited by shorter detection windows, while hair tests provide a more in-depth analysis over an extended period. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
