Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers span nationwide, ready to administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or present other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have grown more prevalent in drug screening practices. Employers, courts, and substance abuse organizations often opt for hair testing over traditional urine testing. This method is favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, legal settings, and probation programs because it offers a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, guarantees an observed collection process, and is challenging to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use (within five days), urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate biomarkers within the fibers, offering a prolonged historical record of alcohol and other substances. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use up to a nearly 3-month timeframe. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipment is hassle-free.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimum sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. Head hair references are exclusive to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory's processing of a drug test result encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of integrating a sample into the lab's system. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse indicators. While Screening is an economical means to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample register as presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive finding in Screening is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples noted as presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation standards of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug intake for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally hard, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Chronilogical usage data: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, as opposed to simply recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become apparent in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the level of drug residues in hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
