Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Tocito, New Mexico. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an authority in hair assessments, with centers across all U.S. cities equipped for these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other bespoke hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers utilize hair follicle tests. The main advantage is the extended detection period for drug use, usually up to 90 days, obtained through an observed collection, making them nearly foolproof. Yet, for drugs used in the last 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, composed of around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Verifying the specimen's weight on a jeweler's scale is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory's system, confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data input not provided through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can determine drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceptionally challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus increasing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, rather than indicating only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
