Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests in Torreon, New Mexico. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our centers nationwide are equipped to conduct such tests. Hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is usually required, whether from the head or body. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle testing is increasingly used for drug screening. More employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for this over urine tests. Companies with strict drug policies, courts, and probation services often employ this method. The extended detection period of up to 90 days and secure collection make it nearly foolproof. For recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of these substances by trapping biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair. When taken close to the scalp, a hair sample can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch strand of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests above 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We advocate weighing the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This phase ensures that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as a preliminary check for prohibited drugs. While Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated for court acceptability. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
