In Truchas, New Mexico, comprehensive hair follicle drug testing is offered by Accredited Drug Testing. Our expertise in hair and alcohol testing is supported by a network of centers nationwide, equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, a sample of 1.5 to 2 inches is required from the head or body hair. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol, ETG, and other tailored testing needs.

The rise in preference for hair follicle drug tests over the past years is notable. This method is increasingly utilized by employers, legal bodies, and substance specialists as an alternative to urine tests. The advantages of this type of test include a 90-day detection window, supervised sample collection, and its resistance to tampering, unlike urine tests, which still excel in detecting recent substance use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of drugs whether alcohol-related or otherwise by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, less prone to tampering, and convenient for shipping purposes.

A 1.5-inch collection of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp amounts to 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be taken. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test result includes four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's system. This process includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening involves a preliminary quick analysis for drugs of abuse. While it offers a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result from Screening requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any sample with a presumptively positive result in Screening necessitates subsequent confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair but at a much lower concentration than other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, leading to more accurate outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It portrays a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand above the scalp, not the follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
