Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Vado, New Mexico. Should you require a drug or alcohol analysis via hair testing, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, providing services in all cities across the nation. For most exams, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is necessary. Tests can target drugs, alcohol/ETG or be customized for other substances.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for evaluations. More employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, court systems, and probation officers rely on hair follicle tests. The test's benefit lies in its longer detection period of up to 90 days, being observed, and being highly tamper-proof. Still, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is renowned as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, hair captures an extended duration of alcohol and drug history. When taken close to the scalp, hair samples can generally provide a 90-day detection timeline for various substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the prime amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, extra exams, and/or assessments above 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise the use of a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. When scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair is an alternative. 'Head hair' explicitly refers to scalp hair, whereas 'body hair' includes all other hair variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the foundational step of entering a sample into the lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While Screening is an efficient way to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal situations. Any samples that screen positive provisionally need an additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, further hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations considerably lower than in other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral samples), which makes hair drug testing notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any screen-positive outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that screen positive undergo cleaning before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is immensely challenging, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can chart a drug use pattern over time, as opposed to only identifying recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair samples.
  • Costly: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
