Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in Veguita, New Mexico. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this domain and have centers across the country ready to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head are required, although body hair can also be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for detecting drug use. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse counselors are increasingly favoring hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is preferred due to its long detection period, often up to 90 days, and the difficulty of manipulating the results. However, for detecting very recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test still holds the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. The fibers of the hair strand capture biomarkers, offering an extended historical record of alcohol and drug use. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can reveal a detection timeline spanning up to three months for alcohol and other substances. The procedure is straightforward, with hair being hard to tamper with and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) from the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, considered the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG tests, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10 drug screens, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen weight is advised. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of drug test results in a laboratory involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab's system. This phase checks that the sample has been properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and undertakes any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary and swift assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be legally viable. Samples suspected of being positive in Screening must undergo a further verification procedure.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity in performing hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology carries out the Confirmation of any positive screening result. Before Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that provide a briefer detection period.
  • Dificult to rig: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Chronological data: It furnishes a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, rather than solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: The detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are commonly pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in individual hair color and growth rate can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
