Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Waterflow, NM. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to, with expertise in hair testing. Our facilities span across all cities Nationwide, ready to conduct your hair test. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either your scalp or body is typically required. Our hair tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers who enforce strict anti-drug policies, legal courts, and probation services. The key advantage of hair drug testing lies in its longer detection span of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, and its resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a detailed record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, this can offer up to a three-month detection period for these substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for testing. For EtG, additional services, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It's best to measure the sample weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. When referring to head hair, we solely mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system, which includes confirming it was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening offers a preliminary examination for drugs. Although efficient for ruling out drug use in most cases, a positive result must be verified for court-use. Any presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a positive, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations than other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • High integrity: Hair drug tests are tough to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: There is a 5-7 day lag before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests," the testing evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
