Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Windmill, New Mexico. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we operate testing centers in every city across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Having between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is generally sufficient for the test. Hair tests are versatile, allowing analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in the drug testing landscape. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests for their intricate needs. Entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, such as employers, courts, and probation individuals, find hair follicle drug tests beneficial due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection method, and resistance to tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and other drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When samples are taken near the scalp, they offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to obtain, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If there is an absence of scalp hair, equivalent body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other types, including facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in processing a drug test result within a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial integration into the laboratory system. This phase ensures that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) is assigned randomly, and any further data entries not included by an electronic chain of custody are finalized.

Screening presents a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. It is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples; however, for its results to be legitimate in a legal context, a positive result must be confirmed. Any samples testing positive during Screening require validation through a secondary confirmation process.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (for instance, urine or oral fluid), presenting hair drug screening as one of the most intricate methodologies.

Verification of any positive screening is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing positive are washed before confirmation, as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 certifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • High integrity: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring the results' accuracy.
  • Historical insight: They can reveal a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this evaluation analyzes the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
