Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Airmont, New York. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing with facilities across all cities in the U.S. able to perform the test. Typically needing 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, these tests can be utilized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method in drug testing practices. Many employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals advocate for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation favor these tests. The key advantage is its extended detection period for substances, lasting up to 90 days, administered under supervision, and being nearly impossible to falsify. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to three months. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels over 10, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not accessible, the same quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair; body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary integration of a sample into the lab's system. This includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial swift check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient means to rule out drug usage in most samples, any positive screens require confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive require secondary confirmation.

If presumptive positivity occurs during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Any positive screen results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests offer detection for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to deceive: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers a historical perspective: It demonstrates drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs in hair become detectable approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
