Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Albion, New York. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis with testing facilities in every city Nationwide to execute such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed, either from the scalp or body. Hair analyses can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing choices.

Lately, drug testing techniques have increasingly incorporated hair follicle assessments. Employers, judiciary, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine exams. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal agencies, and probationary individuals rely on hair tests. The main advantage is its longer detection timeframe, up to 90 days, conducted under direct observation, making deception nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair's strands. When taken from close to the scalp, it delivers an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (face, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial reception of a sample into a lab's database. This process includes verifying the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data input not already provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a quick preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly way to dismiss drug usage across most samples, a screen showing positive results must be validated to be viable in legal proceedings. Samples presumed positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample register as presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the given sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at a significantly lower concentration than from other methods (like urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Any positive result from Screening is verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all samples presumed positive undergo washing as required. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests track drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Gives historical patterns: It relays a pattern of drug consumption over a sustained timeframe, not merely recent habits.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often named "hair follicle tests", the testing analyzes the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
