Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Alder Creek, New York. Our expertise in hair and alcohol testing is unmatched, with centers situated across all major cities nationwide. For effective testing, ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more popular for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are crucial for zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial proceedings, and probation monitoring. With the ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, these tests are hard to cheat. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a powerful resource, hair testing is utilized for identifying drug and alcohol use. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers, hair offers a comprehensive history of substance usage. When taken near the scalp, hair can display up to roughly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For tests related to EtG, additional requirements, and/or over 10 panels, it's advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first processed into the lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any extra information not covered by an electronic chain of custody method.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. This stage involves the removal of drugs from hair at a far lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Positive results from the Screening phase undergo Confirmation through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As needed, presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair credential and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: The tests reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the process examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
