In Arcadia, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether it's a drug or alcohol test you need, we specialize in hair testing with centers across all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for sampling. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other specialized hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug tests, overtaking traditional urine tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests for their zero-tolerance policies, probation monitoring, and legal assessments. With a detection span of up to 90 days, it's collected through a monitored process, making it almost uncheatable. Yet, urine tests remain preferable for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture long-term traces of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fiber of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, this method can reveal substance use over a period of roughly 90 days. Hair samples are straightforward to take, less prone to tampering, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp produces 100mg, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory handling of a sample into the laboratory’s system, ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing leftover data entry not handled by electronic chain of custody systems.

Initial Screening swiftly checks for common drugs, offering a cost-effective method to exclude drug use in most samples. Nonetheless, a positive screening result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any screening results that are initially positive necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample registers positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. In this procedure, drug compounds are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than through other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing uniquely challenging.

Positive screening results are explicitly confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples suggesting positive outcomes undergo cleaning before confirmation, as required. The entire testing procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair testing can uncover drug use stretching back 90 days, whereas urine tests have shorter windows.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Shows historical patterns: It can display drug use trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection in hair requires about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", these assessments focus on analyzing the hair strand itself, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Arcadia, NY, offers superior benefits over traditional urine testing, with higher detection accuracy and longer detection periods. Unlike urine tests, hair samples provide detailed substance history.

The ability of hair tests to detect substance use long-term outshines the more limited urine tests, ensuring reliable results for employers and authorities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
