Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Armor, New York. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol testing, we provide services through our nationwide network, including all cities. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for testing. Our hair tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to meet specific needs.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle testing for drug detection has increased significantly. Employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse specialists are shifting towards hair tests over urine tests. This method is favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, court orders, and probation requirements due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, the observed collection process, and its resistance to tampering. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for the identification of drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG evaluations, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" covers other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The lab procedure for drug test results includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the lab's system. It involves confirming that the sample remains sealed and was shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not present in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial, speedy analysis for drug substances. While it is an economical approach to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be validated to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

In cases where the Screening step yields a presumptively positive result, additional hair is taken from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. At this point, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to carry out.

Verification of any positive Screening results is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected to be positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficult to deceive: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage history: It provides drug use patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Armor, NY, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. The ability to detect substances over a prolonged period sets hair follicle tests apart, ensuring superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window, hair testing provides a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history.

Employers benefit significantly from hair testing, as it provides a clearer depiction of long-term drug use. While urine tests may be easily manipulated, hair follicle tests are far more resistant to cheating, offering a near-impenetrable reliability. This solidifies hair testing's status as a favored method among employers with stringent drug policies in Armor, NY.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Armor, NY, stands out due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days, offering unparalleled insight into an individual's drug use history. This extensive timeframe allows employers to make informed decisions based on a comprehensive substance use profile, beyond the limitations of standard tests.

The testing method provides employers with a thorough overview of an applicant or employee's drug use behavior. This not only helps maintain a safe workplace but also builds confidence in hiring decisions. The expansive detection period of hair testing empowers organizations to maintain a drug-free environment effectively.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Armor, NY, businesses can count on hair follicle testing for its tamper-resistant qualities, effectively reducing the likelihood of sample adulteration. This level of prevention ensures that results remain dependable and undistorted, giving organizations the certainty needed in drug testing procedures.

Unlike other testing methods, hair follicle tests are remarkably difficult to alter, due to their collection and processing nature. This inherent resistance to tampering empowers employers to trust the integrity of their results unequivocally, ensuring a reliable assessment of substance use for safer workplace environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
