Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bainbridge, New York. For those requiring drug or alcohol tests via hair analysis, our specialized centers perform these tests nationwide. Generally, your hair should be 1.5 to 2 inches long, though body hair might be an alternative. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing purposes.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become more popular for drug detection, with many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals preferring it to urine tests. It serves as an effective option for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers. Hair follicle testing's main advantage is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, and its challenging to cheat. However, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow, hair offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over roughly three months. It's straightforward to gather, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hairs (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, regarded as the optimal amount for both testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the hair on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar volume of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (i.e., facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing procedure for a drug test result encompasses four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and includes any additional data entry that hasn’t been submitted via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial cursory evaluation for the presence of illicit drugs. Although this step is a cost-effective means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be validated to be acceptable in court. Any samples testing presumptively positive in the Screening phase need subsequent confirmation.

When a sample registers as presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is managed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing ahead of confirmation as required. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation pursuant to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a narrower detection window.
  • Immunity to falsification: Manipulating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus yielding more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a pattern of drug intake over time rather than merely indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: There's roughly a 5-7 day interval before drugs manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often bear a higher cost compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bainbridge, NY, hair follicle testing outshines urine tests in accuracy and reliability, offering a superior detection window. While traditional urine tests are prevalent, hair tests stand out due to their longer detection periods of up to 90 days. Employers benefit from detailed insights into substance history, knowing that this method is highly resistant to tampering and provides trustworthy outcomes.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle tests in Bainbridge, NY, provide a clear advantage in drug detection. This method offers higher accuracy and covers a broader detection period, ensuring reliable results. Whether for workplace policies or personal purposes, the enhanced detection provided by hair analyses presents a more effective solution, giving better insight into drug use up to three months prior.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Bainbridge, NY, offers an extended detection window, capturing substance use over a much longer term, up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
