Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Bay Park, New York. For those who require hair drug or alcohol screenings, specialized services are available nationwide, including in all cities, to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body may be utilized. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence for substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly favor hair testing over urine testing. Hair follicle screening is favored for zero-tolerance policies, court orders, and probation requirements due to its extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, secure collection method, and difficulty to manipulate. However, urine tests remain more precise for substance use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for uncovering alcohol and drug consumption. Through capturing biomarkers within its strands, hair offers an extended record of substance use spanning several months. When sampled near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug usage history up to roughly three months. This method is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

Providing an ideal sample for both screening and verification, a 1.5-inch portion of hair near the scalp, comprised of around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil), will yield 100mg. For EtG, extensive panels, or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale is advisable for accurate specimen measurement. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary entry of a sample into the lab's system. This phase covers the verification of proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of extra data input that electronic custody systems may not cover.

Screening entails a preliminary, swift evaluation for drug misuse. While Screening provides an economical method to exclude drug use in most specimens, any positive result must be corroborated to be considered in legal contexts. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation.

Upon a presumptively positive Screening result, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as a complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening takes place through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positive results undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug assessments can detect substance use for up to 90 days, as compared to urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological usage data: It provides insight into substance usage patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug testing costs exceed that of alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
