Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Bergen, New York. Whether you require a hair drug test or an alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing extends Nationwide with testing centers in every city. Generally, hair from the crown or body must be 1.5 to 2 inches long. We provide analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized hair testing.

In the last few years, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing methodologies. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair over urine tests. These tests are selected by zero-tolerance employers, probation systems, and courts, primarily due to their extended detection of drug use, lasting up to 90 days, gathered in an observed, hard-to-tamper collection. However, for recent drug use up to 5 days, urine testing remains preferred.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become recognized as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances via biomarkers embedded in the hair fibers as they develop. A hair sample collected near the scalp can reveal up to a 3-month history of drug and alcohol use. It's straightforward to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The processing of drug test samples in a lab involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where the sample enters the lab system. This phase includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry that an electronic chain of custody doesn't cover.

Screening comprises an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Though cost-efficient for majority samples to eliminate drug use, any positive findings in this stage must be verified for court validity. Samples that return positive in the screening require secondary confirmation.

For samples testing positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for further processing. Drugs are isolated from hair at markedly lower levels compared to other methods like urine or saliva, which underscores the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Confirmations are preceded by washing any presumptive positive samples as necessary. The entire process is conducted in compliance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection range.
  • High resistance to manipulation: It's notably challenging to evade a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Timeline insight: Offers insight into drug habits over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to pinpoint recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests come at a higher cost than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth can affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though the term "hair follicle tests" is often used, the analysis focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
