Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments at Binghamton University, NY. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we maintain testing facilities in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair are required. Our tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts prefer them over urine tests. Hair tests suit zero-tolerance commitments, probationary checks, and legal proceedings. Their main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, completed in an observed process, making cheating nearly impossible. For recent drug use (5 days), urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for uncovering substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lengthy history by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber during its growth phase. When sampled near the head, hair can reveal a detection period of up to about 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal quantity for both initial and confirmatory evaluations. For EtG, additional analyses, or panel tests exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should the scalp hair not be available, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The process in the lab for evaluating a drug test result comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a specimen within the lab's framework. This phase ensures the sample's seal and shipping conditions are verified, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishes any further data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment to identify drug usage. Although Screening is a cost-effective tactic to negate drug presence in most samples, positive results necessitate verification for courtroom acceptance. Therefore, any Screening results deemed presumptively positive demand subsequent corroboration.

In cases where a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, hair-derived substances are extracted at concentrations lower than those achieved via alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which underlines the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive Screening outcomes undergo Confirmation using methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to Confirmation, all positive samples undergo necessary washes. The entire procedural chain from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and in line with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long observation time: Hair tests detect drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests' shorter span.
  • Challenges in deception: Cheating a hair test is notably tough, enhancing result reliability.
  • Delivers use patterns: Offers insight into drug use trends over time rather than recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection lacks: A period of approximately 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing often costs more than other methodologies.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and growth rate affect the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand above the scalp rather than the follicle itself

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
