Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bloomingburg, New York. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing and have centers across all U.S. cities to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body can be used. Hair analyses can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing options.

Recently, drug test methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are used by companies with strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage is a longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, with observation-based collection, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, offering an extensive timeline of alcohol and various drug use. When a hair sample is obtained near the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For analyses like EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. It's important to note that references to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a specimen is processed into a laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any such data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial check for drug abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Verification of positive Screening outcomes is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens require washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more authentic results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal drug use patterns over a timeframe rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
