Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Branchport, New York. For individuals in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, we specialize in hair testing, with centers available in all cities across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are required. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific testing needs.

Increasingly, hair follicle tests are being utilized for drug screening. Employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse specialists often choose hair tests over urine tests due to their advantages. Ideal for zero-tolerance drug policies, legal scenarios, and probation cases, hair tests offer a longer detection window of up to 90 days, are conducted under supervision, and are very difficult to manipulate. However, for recent drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a formidable method for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by preserving biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect hair, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

An ideal screening and confirmation sample consists of a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, 150mg is suggested. It is advised to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair specifically indicates scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test consists of four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial incorporation of the sample into a lab’s system. It ensures that the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary, rapid assessment for banned substances. Although Screening is cost-efficient in mostly negating drug usage, to be valid in court, a positive result requires confirmation. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be tentative in the Screening, additional hair from the specimen is extracted for further processing in the Extraction phase. In this step, substances are isolated from hair in concentrations lower compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid). This complexity renders hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed for confirming any positive screening outcome. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as warranted. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Cheat-proof: cheating on a hair test is extremely tough, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It offers a drug use pattern over time, covering more than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • No recent usage detection: Approximately 5-7 days are needed before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests usually incur higher costs than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and unique hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp's follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
