In Bridgewater, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our centers, located nationwide, are adept in conducting these tests. For a hair test, you'll generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other options.

More frequently, hair follicle drug testing has been embraced for drug detection, seeing increased use by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists, shifting from traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance organizations and are vital for probation screenings. The key advantage lies in a longer detection duration, stretching up to 90 days, making them cheat-resistant. However, for recent drug usage in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The testing of hair is now acknowledged as a robust method for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft, offering an extended history of drug and alcohol use. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can provide an approximate detection time frame of up to three months for both drugs and alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, the possibility of tampering is relatively low, and it is easy to transport.

A sample of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil), measuring 1.5 inches from the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is recommended to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processes involved in the analysis of drug test results comprise four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes confirmation that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any additional data entry beyond what an electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening entails a swift preliminary check for substances of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, any positive screen findings need to be corroborated for courtroom admissibility. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate another level of confirmation.

For any sample that tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, the extraction of drugs from hair occurs at noticeably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fliud), which makes hair drug screening a challenging technique to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening result is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The overall laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely tough, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more in comparison to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth rates can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the scalp’s hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bridgewater, NY, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine tests are significant. Superior detection and reliability define this method. It offers a robust alternative for employers and judicial systems who need accurate results.

  • Longer detection window
  • Observed collection process
Hair testing's ability to remain tamper-proof further cements its reliability, making it an outstanding option compared to urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

One significant advantage of hair follicle testing in Bridgewater is its extended detection window, often up to 90 days. This duration offers a comprehensive snapshot of drug use history, an invaluable asset for employers seeking thorough substance insight into applicants or employees. With such a lengthy detection time, businesses gain a clearer and more reliable picture of an individual's substance use patterns.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Employers in Bridgewater, NY, benefit from the hair follicle test’s tamper-resistant nature, which ensures unquestionable results. The testing process remarkably reduces the risk of sample adulteration, maintaining the integrity of the results.

  • Cheat-proof process

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
